Potential transformers

Potential transformers are also commonly known as voltage transformers. SADTEM’s range is comprehensive, incorporating both indoor and outdoor models. SADTEM’s indoor range of potential transformers is divided into three main design types: the compact range, integrated fuse range, plug-in type with insulated cable connection and auxiliary power and VT discharge reactor range. The compact family of indoor transformers itself comprises three ranges: that of 24kV, 36kV and a DIN selection for certain dimensional requirements. The DIN range is supplied in 24kV format, while the compact 24kV and 36kV transformers come with either one or two HV poles. SADTEM’s outdoor range is manufactured using one of two different processes. They use either a metallised resin with an isolator in cycloaliphatic resin or, alternatively, a completely moulded cycloaliphatic resin process. These models are available with a metallised VT and insulated cable connection plug or as VTs custom built for deployment on train roofs.

Potential transformers belong to the classification of instrument transformers and they are a parallel connected type of this unit. They are most often used for protection in high voltage circuits where there is phasor phase shift isolation and also for metering duties. These transformers are also built to add only a negligible load to the test supply that is being measured. This allows them to give the most precise measurement, due to their accurate voltage ratio.
